The Cortlandt Youth & Recreation Center has exciting courses happening this winter and spring for youth ages 2 – 18.

ART CLASSES

Art Explorers (Grades K– 3rd)
Always New Projects! Enjoy elbow deep excitement experimenting with artist quality materials & techniques including 3D fun, painting, drawing, paper mache, and collage in an encouraging supportive environment. Your young artist will stretch their imagination & observational skills to develop their own artistic voice while drawing inspiration from famous artists & art from around the world. Creative risk taking was never so much fun!

Art Quest (Grades 3rd-7th)
Always New Projects! Crazy art exercises will help free up that artist in each of us! Acrylic & Watercolor painting, drawing from still life, collage, and more 3D adventures will be covered. Creative risk taking and problem solving is encouraged.

Young Rembrandts Cartoon Workshop (Grades 1st—6th)
Learning to draw can be fun, especially when we create silly characters, funny expressions and draw jokes! This delightful program combines Young Rembrandts’ innovative, step-by-step drawing method with light-hearted subjects of kids’ facial expressions and personifying food into silly characters which engage children, their sense of humor and their vivid imaginations. Come draw with us! Different lessons each session.

Creative Cooking Classes with Shari Munitz
Come mix it up and join us for some creative cooking. We’ll make it, bake it, stir it, cut it and lots more “hot stuff” (and cold cooking too!) in this enthusiastic, safe, educational and fun kitchen class. We’ll integrate literature, songs, themes, science, math and many skills while expanding out taste palate and being introduced to some new ingredients and food combinations. Not suggested for chefs with food allergies.

LIFESKILLS CLASSES

American Red Cross Babysitting (Ages 11 -15)
The ARC babysitter’s Training course is designed to provide youth with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and responsibly give care for children and infants. This training will help participants to develop leadership skills, learn how to develop a babysitting business, keep themselves and others safe, help children behave and learn about basic child care as well as basic first aid. This fun and highly interactive training will keep youth engaged and allows for hands on practice with use of child care dolls and manikins. Successful participants earn ARC certification. Please bring water and a snack.

American Sign Language (Grades 4th—8th)
Welcome to American Sign Language! Youth will begin by learning the basic signs and advance into dialog as well as learn about the deaf culture. Book is included in fee.

Grand Central Station Tour (Grades 6th – 12th; MUST be currently registered for the YC)
Meet us at the Cortlandt Train Station as we venture into Grand Central Terminal to take an audio tour of the famous station! The tour focuses on the architectural highlights, little known secrets, history and so much more! Enjoy an afternoon of exploration; a perfect winter break activity. Youth must bring a bagged lunch or money for lunch. Youth MUST be a registered YC participant; spaces limited.

Home Alone (Grades 5th-8th)
This program will provide each child with the essentials needed when they are home without adult supervision. Discussion will cover first aid, telephone and door answering, activity plans, encountering emergencies and more!

THEATER CLASSES

Broadway All Stars (Grades 2nd-8th)
Love to act or sing? This workshop is for everyone from the beginning student to the seasoned performer. Experience the fun of the theatrical games, audition and having a role in a live production! Taught by a professional actress/director, youth will enjoy nine working classes with a final Spring performance.

Musical Theater Workshop (Grades 2nd-8th)
Attention: Singers and actors! Immerse yourself in the world of theater! This workshop is for everyone from the student acting for the first time, to the seasoned performer. This program takes the students from the audition process to a final performance everyone will enjoy. Not only will this workshop be a source of fun and excitement but it will also increase the skill level of every student; whether their goal is to become a professional actor or use the workshop to have fun and develop life skills. The production is done with some costumes, props and minimal sets. All youth will have a role to play, will receive a script adapted to the students and will be taught the music they need to perform their role. The results will be a wonderful final performance on Friday at 1:00 PM for family and friends. Limited to 25 youth. Many fun roles to play! Instructor: Robyn Ferracane

5th GRADER PROGRAMS

5th Grade Fun Club (Hendrick-Hudson School District)
The 5th Grade Fun Club Program allows 5th grade youth in the Hendrick Hudson School District to participate in a safe and structured environment after school while challenging themselves with a variety of games, activities and special projects. During this time, these children get acclimated to the Town of Cortlandt Youth and Recreation Center and everything the facility has to offer including but not limited to: indoor game tables, Wii gaming station, 52” TV, homework room & help if needed, art room, outdoor activities and LifeSkills lessons. Participants are bused on the days listed below from their school by the Hendrick Hudson School District to the Youth Center. It is the Parent’s responsibility to pick-up their child by 5:00 PM Pre-registration is required.

Dates: February 4 – April 30 (One day a week per school; no Fun Club when school is closed, has an early dismissal or during 5th grade overnight trip)

Welcome Aboard Luau (All 5th Grade Graduates who are town residents)
The YC will host a special LUAU themed BBQ for 5th Grade Graduates to welcome them to the YC Family! There will be music, food, contests and prizes. The Luau is for all 5th Grade graduates from the Hendrick Hudson, Lakeland (residents) and Croton Harmon School Districts or are a Cortlandt resident. Pre-registration is required by noon on Thursday, April 30th.
