Annual Hydrant Flushing
Annual Hydrant flushing will be conducted Town wide for the next few weeks. Flushing will take place Monday through Thursday from 9:00 p.m to 2:00 a.m. Flushing signage will be placed near the areas to be flushed on a daily basis to keep the public informed of our progress.
The flushing of fire hydrants is necessary to remove naturally occurring sediments that settle in the bottom of water mains and to verify the proper operation of fire hydrants. The operation is performed late at night into the morning to eliminate significant issues with discolored water and drop in pressure.
Discolored water may be drawn into your home or business if it is used when we are flushing or immediately after flushing. The discolored water comes from the minerals and deposits that are dislodged during the flushing process. The discolored water is NOT harmful to drink, but it could cause laundry stains. If you notice discolored water, run your cold water for several minutes until it is clear before doing any laundry. Do not run the hot water until your cold water runs clear.
If you have any questions or concerns, please call the Town of Cortlandt Water Division at (914) 734-1026.
