As the Supervisor of The Town of Cortlandt, the host community for Indian Point, I am writing to inform you of a major rally against Holtec on May 6, at The Cortlandt Waterfront Park in Verplanck, at 2 PM. This site is a Town owned park, adjacent to Indian Point and the perfect venue: beautiful views of the Hudson. The Town Board is sponsoring this event.
As you may be aware, Holtec International is planning to discharge 1 million gallons of radioactive water into the Hudson River as part of its decommissioning process. Their argument is that this is a low level of radiation, that they have been doing it continuously since the plant opened, and that there are no other viable options. The Town of Cortlandt, as well as multiple local other municipalities and agencies, strongly objects. Since the decommissioning process began, The Town has been working with the State’s Decommissioning Oversight Board. Disappointingly, this Oversight Board has taken no action on this issue and has stated that it is really a Federal (NRC) and State (DEC) decision. The Town Board feels this is unacceptable, and we are prepared to fight vehemently against this happening. We anticipate this to be a major rally with thousands in attendance.
