Cortlandt Fiber Arts: Louise Landry
Currently on view Cortlandt Fiber Arts: A Contemporary Survey, explores contemporary trends in fiber-based works. Louise Landry’s works are a painterly post-impressionistic exploration of the possibilities of fiber as a medium. With echoes of Cézanne and Bonnard, Tulips, 2022 is a luscious rendering of yellow tulips in a blue vase, their forms barely defined drawing the viewer to contemplate the colors of her palette over the forms in image.
“I began using wet felting to create landscapes and floral still lifes a few years ago and took to the medium right away. I’m inspired by the vivid colors of the dyed wool roving and work from photos I take of outdoor scenes or flower arrangements. I layer wool roving on a bamboo mat, adding detail as I add layers. The wool is sprayed with soapy water and then rubbed and rolled until the fibers bind together to form the felted piece. I sometimes add machine stitching for detail.” – Louise Landry
