Important Indian Point Update

Release Date: November 22, 2019

A Message from Supervisor Linda Puglisi on the announcement from Entergy to transfer/sell the Indian Point nuclear plants to Holtec, Inc.

“I have been notified today that Entergy, the current owner of the Indian Point nuclear plants located in the Village of Buchanan and Town of Cortlandt, along with Holtec, a decommissioning company, has filed a petition with the NRC to transfer/sell these plants to Holtec in 2021.

Upon review and evaluations by the NRC and then by the NYS PSC, it is stated in the filing, filed by Entergy that Holtec would be the new owners and would be responsible for the decommissioning of these plants once they completely close in 2021.

Along with our partners, Village of Buchanan and Hendrick Hudson School District, Westchester County, Verplanck Fire District and Hendrick Hudson Free Library (all receive tax revenues from Indian Point) the Town Board and I will remain very involved to ensure safety at these plants and insist on the 240 acres a full environmental clean-up, during this lengthy dismantling process which could take decades to complete.  Our local and state task forces (which I co-chair) along with our newly established PANEL group, which will monitor the decommissioning and give information to our community over the upcoming years will all continue.  The Mayor of Buchanan is the Chair of this new PANEL and I will serve as the Vice-Chairperson.  There are many interested members of the communities serving on these important groups.

The loss of revenue, the loss of jobs and the environmental clean-up are major issues that we will continue to address and monitor throughout this process.”
