Closure of Indian Point

Release Date: April 30, 2021

In the sixty year history that the Indian Point nuclear plants have been in the Village of Buchanan, the host community and in the Town of Cortlandt these plants have provided many good jobs and revenue for our communities.  Our largest employer and largest taxpayer over the six decades.

I also want to take this opportunity to thank all of the employees over the years for their hard work, skilled work and for operating these plants safely – most importantly.

Thank you to Entergy for giving back to our community in many ways.  In particular for us paying for our fireworks display each year at our annual Cortlandt Family Fun Day and many more.

I personally want to thank my partners Mayor Theresa Knickerbocker and Superintendent Joe Hochreiter for working with me especially during these four years since we learned of the closing of Indian Point on January 9, 2017. It has been a learning experience and a journey to get us to today.  We went to endless meetings, spoke to reporter’s almost daily and to editorial boards to explain the challenges we all will face once Indian Point closes. They are both dedicated and it has been a pleasure to have such good people who truly care to work with.

I also want to thank the many members who volunteered to serve on our task forces, residents, representatives of local citizen groups and from the environmental groups, as well as real estate members, liaisons from our boards, library, the County, and fire department and of course a tremendous thank you to Labor and the Unions.  They played a big part when Indian Point was opened and in their participation on our task forces.

Thank you to our other elected officials:  Federal, State, County for their support.  County Legislators, State Senator and Assemblywoman, County Executive George Latimer and special thanks to former Congresswoman Nita Lowey.

To our Cortlandt Town Board – thank you for your support and work during these past years as we did our best to meet the many challenges with the closure of Indian Point.

Now in the next chapter of the Indian Point journey we will continue our collective efforts to monitor the decommissioning, ask our tough questions and as always give that information to our residents.

Thank you all!

Supervisor Linda D. Puglisi
