Arbor Day
Today, April 28th, is Arbor Day, which is a secular day of observance in which individuals and groups are encouraged to plant trees. The Town of Cortlandt's Conservation Advisory Council was contacted by Nicholas Haas, who founded Common Food for Common Good, a 501(c)3 nonprofit headquartered in Bergen County, with the intent to facilitate the creation of community gardens and fruit tree spaces as a way to address local food insecurity. They began a fruit tree program this year, with the goal of planting groups of fruit trees throughout the Lower Hudson Valley. Once established, the trees will grow a large amount of fruit for community members in need of food assistance, while also adding to the natural beauty of the area. The Town is grateful for the donation of six apple trees that were planted by Nicholas and our Parks Department.
