Town of Cortlandt Storm Update
On Sunday, July 9th many areas in Westchester. Rockland and Orange County experienced severe flooding which caused damage to area homes and infrastructure. The Town of Cortlandt was impacted by this flooding in certain areas of the Town. Our Town crews have been out assessing all of the areas and homes that were impacted. It appears, thankfully, that we did not suffer damage to the degree that was seen in our neighbors in Yorktown and Putnam Valley. At the height of the flooding we had three roads closed (Sprout Brook Road, Gallows Hill Road and Root Street/Skylark Drive). In addition, our town pool was impacted with mud and debri from the storm. This caused us to close the pool on Monday but with the work of our crews we were able to reopen on Tuesday. There were many, many fallen trees and limbs throughout our 50 square mile town. Due to the extraordinary efforts of our Town staff, all roads were reopened by Monday evening. We are grateful to our staff, who worked to get the roads reopened and our pool operational.
Please be aware that New York State has reopened U.S. Route 6/202 (Bear Mountain Bridge Road) in both directions between State Route 9D and U.S. Route 9 in the Town of Cortlandt, however motorists will not be able to cross the Bear Mountain Bridge into Rockland County as this remains closed. We do not have an estimate as to when this will be reopened. We will provide updates to the community as we receive them from New York State Department of Transportation.
We are currently working with Congressman Mike Lawler, State Senator Peter Harckham, Assemblywoman Dana Levenberg, as well as County Executive George Latimer to submit information to New York State for damages to our infrastructure.
Governor Hochul is seeking a Federal Disaster Declaration for New York State. If this is approved for our region it will open up the ability to file for FEMA reimbursement through the federal government. We encourage all residents who sustained damage to contact their insurance company, keep copies of all expenses and file for FEMA reimbursement if the declaration is approved. In addition, below is a link from Westchester County Department of Emergency Services. They are asking local governments and residents to complete their damage form in order to calculate the damage incurred in Westchester County.

In collaboration with affected counties, New York State has developed this online form allowing residents to self-report damages to their homes and/or businesses from the most recent rainfall flooding event. The purpose of this form is solely to collect information that may help State and local officials identify damages and to develop requests by the State for federal disaster recovery assistance programs. This form is NOT an application for disaster relief programs.
