Job Description:         

Assist the Town Clerk with all of the activities in the Office of the Town Clerk.  This is a responsible administrative position requiring the incumbent to assist the Town Clerk in all the areas of responsibilities as mandated by law. As Deputy, the incumbent is required to act for and on behalf of the Town Clerk. Independent action is required when questions arise and the Town Clerk is not available for consultation. This position will be responsible for the supervision of other employees in the Office of the Town Clerk. The successful candidate MUST be a resident of the Town of Cortlandt in order to be appointed to this position.

Description of Work (Illustrative Only):

  • Assists in the custody of all records, books and papers of the Town, including paper and digital databases.
  • Registers births and deaths and issues burial permits as Deputy Registrar of Vital Statistics
  • Filing of certificates, oaths and other papers required by law.
  • Light Accounting & Bookkeeping.
  • Maintains ordinance book.
  • Maintains various calendars and tracks deadlines.
  • Issues dog, marriage, bingo, firework permits and other licenses and collects fees for such licenses.
  • Performs all above duties and others required of the Town

Minimum Acceptable Training and Experience:

Three (3) years of experience in an administrative position within an office setting.  Bachelor’s Degree preferred and strong computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite.  Successful candidate must have strong skills with Microsoft Excel and Adobe, and be willing to learn specialized programs. Experience and understanding of municipal government preferred.  All applicants MUST be town residents in accordance with New York State Town Law.

Compensation: 

$74,836-$82,535
